proposals, project outlines, treatments, SWOT analysis

 document
 description
 purpose & mediums
 key advice for completing successfully
 proposals
the initial idea for a project that can be written or a presentation (a pitch)
to sell an idea to a client or a boss
target audience, content ideas, resource requirements, costs outline, timescale outline, audience for proposal s normally management so It needs to be in non technical language.
 treatments
exact structure depends on medium
contains more detail than a project outline, act structure depends on medium
two specific audiences, production team use it as reference points, vital in large production as communication might be hard,
client/ boss/ investor to get a much better idea of what the finished project should be.
 project outlines
initial document given to key members of the production team, includes enough detail so the team has an idea of what they're making
used as a basis for all other pre production, documents by the production team
details of narrative, resource requirements, budget limitations, timeline of production
 SWOT analysis
produced early in production to asses: what ideas are viable, what limitations the project might face in terms of resources & personnel, may also be produced later in pre production e.g a location or casting role.
to assess strengths and weaknesses and opportunities and threats of project

strengths
  1. free 30 day subscription
  2. very few adverts
  3. choice to sign up or not
weaknesses
  1. other streaming platforms out there
  2. they don't have any research on their customers
  3. don't have a customer base
  4. high cost of artistic royalties
  5. can't work under that name, should change name to Joel
  6. 30 day subscription
  7. multiple sign ups for 30 day free month
opportunities
  1. could make it cheaper
  2. create partnerships
  3. decentralising streaming indusrtry
threats
  1. bigger competition
  2. illegal streamers
  3. pop artists may not choose you: expensive

logistics

  • production schedule
  • call sheet
  • site structure diagram
  • asset log
  • risk assessment
  • recess
  • set design
bring together logistic and resource details for a project

includes all tasks required plus the time scales needed to get them done

used to track process of project and make sure its on track

shared with all members of production team so they are aware of when milestones are and when deadlines need to be hit

production schedules should include:

details of the initial proposal

key milestones agree with client as well as final deadline

details of locations required, plus care details (transport, catering)

details of all resources- props, personnel, equipment

complete details of roles & responsibilities for each member of production team

call sheet:

used to plan logistics for each day of production

develop from production schedule, but offer more detail

call sheets include:

location details

crew details

health & safety notes

transport schedule

filming schedule

equipment

Site maps/site structure diagram:
A one diagram which outlines the purpose and content of each individual page on a website

Each page is given its own box

Lines are used to illustrate the web links between pages

This is not a layout document, but more to do with simply breaking down content of each page

This can then be circulated between the technical and creative teams who develop the ideas from there

Loos at the hierarchy o page as the trunk an all other branching off
asset log:
ìA document which lists all the elements or assets of a product
ìThis includes videos, images, sound, typography designs and any other element of style or content
ìIt covers both content produced by the production company and obtained from other sources
ìThis allows the company to keep track of copyright issues and permissions – making sure that everything has permission granted before it hits market
The asset log will contain:
-What the asset is
-Details of what the asset contains
-Whether permission is required and if so, whether it has been granted yet

Set design:
ìvisual design of how the set will look when set up
ìCould be 2D (a sketch) or produced using 3D imaging software (in the exam, if asked, yours will be 2D)
ìWill include a visual representation of how the background and props will look in as much detail as possible
ìUsed by technical team to them plan camera positions and movements
ìMay include annotations to further explain elements of set

recess:
ìConducted at the same time as risk assessmentìJudges suitability of location for productionìWill consider if it meets creative visionìWill also consider logistical issues – accessibility with equipment, availability when required, costìGenerally will recee multiple locations for same scene – location which is best fit creatively & logistically will be picked

risk assessment:
ìConducted on a visit by the production company to all locations before production startsìIdentifies and health and safety concernsìDevises solutions to manage any hazards on locationìMay include taking photographs ìRisk assessments protect you, your crew, your actors and your equipment. They look at hazards which can harm and can effect your production and put a PLAN B in place.

creative paperwork 1

 document
 description (what it contains)
 purpose and medium
 key advice for completing successfuly
 storyboard
  •  visual plan used in pre- production
  • designed to be most detailed
  • covers all technical aspects (camera, editing, lighting, sound, graphics)
  •  designed to be most detailed plan for visual production
  • used to structure filming
  •  include a lot of detail
 script/ screenplay
  • produced by a scriptwriter, breaking dow the overall idea and story, into a film able, scene by scene structure
  • action is written in past tense
  • dialogue is written as actor would deliver it
  •  used to plan shots as contains key camera language
  • used by actors to develop performances, as it includes their dialogue and details on expression
  • slug lines (scene heading) also include:
  1. whether the scene is interior or interior
  2. location of scene
  3. time of the scene, when it takes place
  •  slug lines, camera language
 shooting script
  •  development on script/ screenplay
  • used in video production
  • more detailed than story board, but less artistic
  • includes details on:
  1. scene numbers
  2. camera angles
  3. shot types
  4. sound
  5. all elements of screenplay/ script (location, dialogue etc.)
  •  helps to structure the filming

LO1 and LO2 test reflect and perfect

1) explain the client requirements of this brief, outlining which are explicit, implicit and open to interpretation (10) 2/10

in the client brief, it states that it Is a promotional video. this is explicit because they have given direct information to the client. as well as this, the fact that they stated the video should last for 20-40 seconds. this is open for interpretation because it gives you the option to decide how long you would want it. there is no implicit.

2) 4/4

3) 7/8
this can be resolved by recruiting more staff so you can have productive work 24/7

5) 3/5
the wages of the staff will impact the project because they will only be able to hire a certain amount of high end people. this will impact the budget because they will only be able to afford certain equipment and may have to use hire purchase in order to meet the demands of quality.

6) 1/3
the target market of the project is 8- 14. this is stated in the client brief. this would impact the research because they won't have to learn what market they want to be in and they can't get straight into designing the shoe to fit the 8 -14 year old market.

7) 1/3
include 4 key words:
deadline, contingency, tasks, milestones

Gantt charts enable you to be aware of the deadline given by allowing yourself to set up certain times for each project. this also allows yourself to be set up with a contingency incase something goes wrong. it also displays all your tasks within the project and the goals you need to reach the overall aim.

concept art

  • concept art
  • visualisation diagrams
  • flat plans
  • prototypes
  • mock up
concept art- concept art is a type of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, comic books, or other media before it is put into final product

example: Zayn Malik (pillow talk)

visualisation diagram:
  • a rough diagram used to plan a product
  • the diagram is static, hand drawn or produced on design software but not moving
  • usually shows the proposed design of a text in some detail
  • used to assess the financial and logistic viability of the creative teams design
flat plans:
  • a 2d drawing which represents how all elements are laid out in a print or web based text
  • includes all elements which will be in the final product
  • allows the designer to see if proportions of each element are correct and that all required elements are included
  • detail of each aspect is not included purely a layout tool with each element labelled.
  • can also be used to plan the layout of a tv studio, prior to cameras coming in
  • must be quick and easy to modify so that layout changes can be made with minimal fuss.
prototypes:
  • early model of a media product
  • allows early testing
  • won't include all details and stylish elements
  • test functionality
  • its a way to test if key, core, functional elements are all working
mock up:

  • similar to flat plans & wire frames, but contain more detail, such as content and colour schemes
  • shown to clients to gain feedback before the final version
  • used in print and online media
  • new software means that page mock ups for interactive products now often include their interactive elements, this is now becoming a hybrid with a prototype.

How many people are imprisoned for licence fee evasion?
In England and Wales there are 180,000 prosecutions

LO2 revision

extract the aspects of the clients requirements that are explicit, implicit and open to interpretation?
explicit: consist of a promotional package across different media platform, 2 new games, different genres, its for schools and collages,
Implicit: popular family game, advertisement, platforms: social media
can you foresee any logistical issues?
personnel, props, production equipment, location, transportation, managing a large budget

any legal issues and what impact would that have?
there could be problems with copyright or trademarks. this is because someone that is creating a new game or entering the competition may use someones logo or name which would make the eligible to be sued. also can't discriminate in game.

define the target audience (detailed)?
the target audience is the family market which is increasingly popular. target market is also teenagers and young adults.

what costs are involved?
the television campaign will cost a lot of capital for the business. as well as this,  a lot of capital will be spent on the social networking sites and e- media to help support the advertisement.

what market research would help this project?
research on the unique selling point of the game will be vital when selling it.  as well as this, the research on the target audience will also be very important.

what project management tools could help oversee this project?
could use special management skills

LO1 test reflect and perfect

reflect and perfect for test                                            mark:17/25= Merit

1. identify two costs that you may need to consider when developing a new phone app and explain how these costs impact the project (6)

one cost of a new phone app is paying a designer to develop it for you. this cost will fluctuate depending on the expertise of the designer. the higher the level of expertise of the designer, the higher end app you will have. another cost of creating a new phone app is the complexity of it. if the app is more complexed, it will cost a lot more to create and will take a lot more time.

2. identify one act of legislation that is applicable to the creation of a new national newspaper and explain what impact it is (3)

one act of legislation is the data protection act. this is because when a journalist is writing an article in a newspaper paper, they have to be careful what data they put in so they don't expose the data of the customer. if exposed, they can file can file a lawsuit against them.

3. you have been offered a job as an apprentice for a company called Align Media. when they offered you the apprenticeship, you were required to sign a form giving the intellectual rights of any work you produce to Align Media (3)

I am required to sign the form  so when work is created, the company already own the rights and don't have to ask for permission first.

5. Identify two ethical issues that you would need to consider before your team develops ideas for a documentary on refugees. Explain how these will impact on the project (8)

One ethical issue you would have to consider, is having a legitimate documentary as any untrue information could be seen as slander. Due to this all facts and figures should be checked before creating the script.

Another ethical issue is that many employees may be affected personally by the refugees and as you would have to consider if the language of others may upset them and may become discriminatory/racist towards anyone affected. Therefore, you would have to carry out background checks of all individuals beforehand to make sure nobody will become upset.

6. identify one regulatory body which could provide guidance with regard to creating a new advert for a children's charity. explain your choice (2)

the ASA is the advertisement body in media. this is funded by the advertisement industry . this will Make the advert appropriate for all ages.

project management

project management

  • Project management is the role of ensuring that all aspects of a given production run smoothly by overseeing a number of people/ departments.
  • The project manager would ensure that deadlines are met and the brief is followed by leasing with others and holding them into account.
  • project management is the effective planning and running of a project, from the ideas point to the end product and evaluation
  • planning requires an outline of the tasks, deadlines, contingencies and milestones that will be required to manage the project efficiently.

key words:
  • tasks (that need to be done)
  • deadlines (for each task)
  • milestones (within the tasks and overall projects)
  • contingencies (back up plan)

Gantt chart:

  • A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule, named after its inventor, Henry Gantt, who designed such a chart around the years 1910–1915. Modern Gantt charts also show the dependency relationships between activities and current schedule status.
  • A Gantt chart uses horizontal bars to illustrate project completion dates, progress, and milestones and dependencies.
  • its the ultimate protection tool
  • each bar represents each part of production
  • its used as a project calendar/ production tool
  • where tasks overlap with others
  • start and end of entire projectImage result for gantt chart
production schedule (excel)
to do list
workflow: split by team members so that it is clear who is doing what

pre production: product management:

  • initial pitch or treatment-
  • call sheet- who is needed for what scenes
  • budget proposal form- amount of money needed to film
  • budgets- amount of money available
  • contract- contracts with actors and employees
  • storyboards- the plot of the film
  • set diagram-
  • camera shot list- list of scenes that are being filmed.
  • talent release form- legal permission to use someone in your project.
  • location release form- permission to film on certain land
  • daily progress report
  • continuity sheet
  • equipment log- the equipment needed
  • shooting script- which scenes in certain order and timings
  • visual effects (FX) breakdown
  • audience questionnaire for product testing- feedback
  • asset log
  • risk assessment- health and safety
  • recce/ scouting sheet
  • editing log- editing scenes after

logistics:

this is the complex process of organising resources for production
this includes getting:

  • personnel
  • props
  • production equipment
  • locations
  • transportation
  • care on location

daily planner/ call sheet:
these are used each day on production.
ensures everyone on set knows what to do and what their goals are.
helpful because it clarifies goals for day in one, simple sheet which can be circulated amongst everyone.
lists all resources and logistical details as well as creative aims.

logistic forms:
  • these are used each day on production
  • besides the one listed below, there may also be a clearances form
  • they are known as release forms as the individual releases their claim over their likeness, property or ideas by signing
why are these forms essential to media production?
  • individual release form- sign over rights to their work
  • consent form- for all people who are in production
  • location form- for all locations used in film

what are the four key considerations we need to think about when planning an effective media project:
  • budget
  • how to have effective communication
  • know your aims and objectives

research methods

research methods

quantitive: research that involves numerical data.

qualitative: research that involves non numerical data.

primary research:

  • observation
  • surveys/ questionnaires
  • focus groups
  • interview
  • qualitative (non- numerical data)
secondary research:
  • online research
  • documentaries
  • books
  • internet
  • blogs
  • magazines/ newspapers
  • tv programmes
  • quantitative ( numerical data)
who can do/ does audience research?
someone who organises the media project

when should audience research be done?
before, during, after

why should audience research be completed?
to work out how successful your product may be in certain audiences.

what research methods can be used?

primary, secondary.

surveys/ questionnaires:

provide you with accurate and measurable data.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Quick to design and send out to large samplesNot able to gain detail behind the responses
Easy to measureDoesn’t ensure responses from relevant participants

interviews:

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Able to gain in depth responsesNot as easy to measure and analyse
Ensures the participants you are speaking to will be relevant to your researchParticipants could be influenced by the interviewer or the interviewing environment
focus groups:
a group interview with a twist.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Able to generate extra data from the group interactionNot as easy to measure and analyse
Allows a large sample size for qualitative data collectionThe researcher could have less control in a focus group setting compared to an interview
observation:
he final kind of research is observation, in which the researcher observes the participants and collects quantitative data in a natural setting.

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Can compare the data to responses from participants to make a comparisonThe observations can not be generalised
Generates relevant and quantifiable dataIf a group is aware they are being observed, they may behave differently
